About Face USA
June 07, 2007
Do you ever take your face for granted?
I have a face that looks like it's worn out three bodies, I like to joke. Yeah, I have wrinkles to go along with the hairless scalp and the salt-and-pepper mustache. But it's basically a normal, run-of-the-mill face.
Unfortunately, not everyone in the world can take advantage of such a situation.
Many are born with facial defects that draw stares, gawking looks, and insensitive comments.
These are plain, ordinary folks like ourselves. Talking to them, you would never dream there was anything different about them. But the unfortunate hand that life has dealt them means that they face a lifetime of alter-existence.
That's where today's FamilyFirst pick is making a difference. It's called About Face USA. Here's their mission:
The mission of AboutFace USA is to provide information and emotional support to individuals with facial differences and their families and increase public understanding through awareness programs and education on behalf of those we serve. We support individuals whose facial differences are present at birth, such as cleft lip and palate, Apert, Crouzon, Treacher Collins and Moebius syndromes, vascular malformations, as well as other conditions. We also serve those who have acquired facial differences as a result of illness, disease or trauma, such as stroke, cancer, accident and fire.
They are a very worthy cause who are allowing kids and adults to regain self-confidence, self-esteem, and dignity. Check them out.
