Ackadia

ackadia-logo.gifAs an IT professional, I can speak from experience: The world of information technology is a complicated one. And its technology is possibly the fastest-improved in existence. If you are in this business, it is essential that you keep up with the very latest, or you get left behind.

Fortunately, for the technically-challenged who nonetheless who would like to stay abreast with the IT world, there are sites like today's FamilyFirst pick: Ackadia.

What is Ackadia? Its opening statement sums it up: “Run by a (retired) computer consultant, Ackadia is a family friendly site offering help and articles on web design, computers, general interest, education, RPGs PC games.”

My observation? The site is fun, veddy British, eccentric, and has gems of knowledge buried throughout. I predict that you will enjoy it.

The webmaster sometimes has good intentions, but limited time and resources. You'll find a few sections with apologetic statements bemoaning their lack of content.

That's my favorite aspect of this site: its humility. The webmaster is an accomplished designer with many years of experience in graphics, but is still very “aw shucks” about his creations. He's more of a Walter Payton than a Terrel Owens, you know what I mean?

The man definitely knows his web design. He offers plain-language explanations of technologies like XHTML, PHP, CSS, meta tags, etc. He is an advocate of accessiblity in web design, and it shows in his commentary.

Enjoy today's FamilyFirst site. You'll gain valuable knowledge of information technologies, and also get a kick out of its occasional eccentricities.
