Ancestors from Norway
July 13, 2006
I'm of Norwegian descent, through and through.
Norwegians have a slightly off-center reputation as far as ethnicity is concerned. According to Garrison Keillor, the Norwegian farmers at Lake Wobegon were renowned for blowing their noses with one finger. Nuff said.
Anyhow, we are known for thriftiness, eating fish preserved with lye, and for spawning the original vikings.
In fact, I am indeed penny-wise (although it was learned, not genetically inherited), have never touched lutefisk, and have never pillaged.
However, I am primarily Norwegian, and proud of my ethnic background. That's what caused today's FamilyFirst selection: Ancestors from Norway. Here's their mission:
This website was created in 1996 to provide a road map to various Internet resources on Norwegian - American genealogy. Since then, Ancestors from Norway has grown to over one hundred separate web pages, and now contains several original articles on how to trace your Norwegian ancestors, as well as numerous links to genealogy-related web sites in Norway and the U.S. The articles you will find on this web site provide detailed information on how to use various Norwegian genealogy sources such as census records, church records, and "bygdebøker". In addition, there are several articles that provide background information on such topics as the Norwegian patronymic naming system.
In fact, I am the proud owner of a genealogical trace that goes back to the twelfth century! And the listed names are thoroughly Norwegian, through ansd through.
But many of Scandinavian descent are looking to create their own ancestral records. This site will prove to be of great benefit to them.
So for those Norwegians out there, uff dah! And for everyone else, enjoy this peek at a particularly intriguing ethnic heritage.
