Windows is sort of like taxes. Nobody likes taxes, but most folks grudgingly admit that they are inevitable.

Linux is a very viable solution, but the fact that Microsoft has Windows preloaded on nearly every new computer sold today means that its dominance is, at least for now, unassailable.

What makes this maddening is that Windows, every version, is stinking annoying. It assumes that you don't want all menu items displayed, only the most recent. It assumes that you don't want to see file extensions. It assumes that you have no business browsing certain folders on your system. It assumes that you want a paperclip popping up and bugging you when you're trying to type a letter. It assumes you want a dog to start digging when you search for a file. The list goes on and on.

Today's FamilyFirst site is there to help you get rid of all (well, most) of Windows' annoyances. It's called annoyances.org. Here's their mission:

Stomp out annoyances with the topics on this site. Check out the various Annoyances books for more advanced, in-depth solutions. Use the discussion forums (links to your left) to talk annoyances and solutions with other annoyed users.

Now, I realize that most of you are scared (justifiably so) to dive into the registry and start chopping. You should be an experienced old goat like myself before you do that. But if you're new to computing, check out the Tips for Beginners. There is a lot of good old common-sense, safe knowledge there.

Other site areas include Registry Tips, Software, Books, Using Windows, Customizing, Annoyances, Networking, Reducing Clutter, Performance, Troubleshooting, Applications, Humor, and FAQ.

So visit the site, and start clearing out those annoyances!

Love your site! I am 76 years old and have used a Mac for the last 20 years. It only costs a little more to go first class!

I have no problems with viruses, using MS Word, managing photos, copying CDs, burning or viewing DVDs, e-mails or any other computer related activities.

I too am getting "baldish" so keep up the good work.

    Howard

P.S. I also have two Beta VCRs if you ever need one!
