When I was a kid, I was big into building stuff.
I had Lincoln Logs, Tinkertoys, Krazy Ikes, Legos, and a Gilbert Erector Set. I loved creating things, then taking them apart. In the case of Lincoln Logs, oftentimes its disassembly would be by means of an imaginary tornado or bomb attack.
There's something about construction toys that appeal to boys, and to many girls, too. Many of these kids go on to careers involving constructing things.
Today's FamilyFirst site takes a loving look back at antique construction sets. It's called ArchitecToys.com, a Collection for the Millenium.
The website is actually a teasing look at a magnificent collection of over 1800 construction sets from all over the world. Quoting from the site, manufacturers include "Richter, Meccano, A.C. Gilbert, Schoenhut, Crandall, Marklin, Bing, Ives, Froebel, J.L. Wright, Halsam, Lyons, Lego, Structo, Stanlo, Lionel, Marx, McLoughlin Bros. The Embossing Co., etc."
I remember Marx, Lionel, Structo (more for metal vehicles than erector sets), and a few others, but most of these manufacturers were European in origin, making toys for children of their country.
The photos are amazing. I loved browsing through the Gilbert sets. I even think I found the one I had, a Senior Powerline set from 1970. That bad boy had an electric motor that really made things happen!
So enjoy sneaking a peek at this amazing collection of construction toys. I wonder if kids in the 1930's lost parts like I did?
