Baking Powder Submarines
April 12, 2007
Kids have always loved ripping open cereal boxes and eagerly rifling through the contents to find buried treasure. One of the earliest and most successful cereal giveaways was the baking powder submarine.
Often called baking SODA submarines, they sank to the bottom like stones if you packed them with the latter substance. No, they required baking POWDER to operate.
And operate they would. They would form bubbles, rise to the surface where the bubbles would break, and sink back to the bottom. The process would be repeated for as long as fifteen minutes.
It was magical stuff for kids in the 50's.
Today's FamilyFirst site celebrates the baking powder submarine. It's called (duh!) Baking Powder Submarines. Here's the purpose of the site, in the author's own words:
After doing a lot of searching on the net about (submarines), I quickly found that there is no real center place to find out about them. While there are many matches on the net, most of them are selling them, while others mention them in passing. I wanted to put together an information page where people who want more info on them can go.
He has compiled a tremendous amount of information about the freebie toys that entranced a generation. You'll have a blast learning their history, reading fun accounts of their use, and also where you can get them today. Enjoy!
