Behind the Label

It's not something that we like to think about.

But perhaps we should anyway.

The fact is that we, as Americans, have grown used to buying clothing, among other items, at pricers that are ridiculously low. A shirt that cost ten bucks in 1970 can be purchased now for the same price. This while gasoline has gone from 35 cents a gallon to three bucks.

While it's great for us, it's not so great for the large workforce who are forced to work for pathetic wages to supply the gargantuan demand for the aforementioned cheap goods.

That's where today's FamilyFirst site takes a stand.

It's called Behind the Label. Here's their mission:

BehindTheLabel.org represents the efforts of a global alliance of clothing workers, religious leaders, and students standing up to demand human rights for sweatshop workers. From workers demanding respect and dignity in the Dominican Republic or Thailand, to students protesting on their behalf at university campuses, to religious leaders speaking out against labor exploitation in their congregations, BehindTheLabel.org will tell the stories of the fight to end sweatshops around the world. Read stories, watch video, and flip through photos of clothing workers and the people who care about the people who manufacture their clothes to make a difference. Follow breaking news stories as they happen.

Read about the courage and determination of the workers who toil away making subsistence wages.

Read about the successful formation of a union in El Salvador, and what it has accomplished.

You may or may not be a fan of labor unions, but one thing is undeniably true about them: they cause sweatshops to go away. And that's good news for everybody.

So take a good look at today's FamilyFirst site. And please, think about it afterwards.
