Bluegrass Basset Rescue

It has been a tradition on the Family First Site to feature sites that have a wide reaching theme, yet act in a smaller geographic area. I call it "thinking globally, acting locally". Today we visit a site that has a very important mission, one that could be anywhere, but it is located physically in the bluegrass state of Kentucky.

The name of the site is Bluegrass Basset Rescue. The mission of this site is to provide a loving environment for basset hounds, either by providing foster homes for abandoned dogs, or by taking dogs from people who just don't want them anymore. They also organize adoptions between dogs and prospective owners. I like the way the describe their site, it is "Done for the dogs.. Done for the volunteers, and most of all, done for you; the people viewing it right now".

There is a page that tells about available dogs, and also about the successful adoptions that they have had (35 in the year 2005 so far, and 67 in 2004!). There is a section where you can offer to be a volunteer or foster parent (they don't have the form up yet, but please contact them for that information), and other ways that you can help. One nice feature is an online charity auction with all sorts of items that can be bid on, with all funds going to the dogs (literally!). Some of the items are on eBay, some are on the Daily Drool (and not I'm not kidding). Be sure to sign up for the mailing list so you can keep up with the latest happenings of this fine organization.

While this site is located in Kentucky, the concept is one that can be put into action just about anywhere, and not just limited to basset hounds. The founders of this organization have a very worthwhile operation, and their website shows that. They are truly thinking globally and acting locally.
