Caves.org

I was very fortunate in that I was able to spend two wonderful years living on a big farm in southwest Missouri when I was nine and ten years old. It was out in the middle of nowhere, twenty miles from town. We had foul-smelling sulfur water (which I got used to in very short order). But we also had a wealth of caves to explore.

There were at least a half-dozen caves on our 250 acres, and many more a short walk down the creek. I spent many hours in the dark with a flashlight exploring.

So, even though I no longer have the free time I once had to crawl into caves, I still enjoy reading about them and seeing pictures.

Today's FamilyFirst site is caves.org, the official site of the National Speleological Society. Here's their mission:

Welcome to the National Speleological Society (NSS)! With over 12,000 members and 200 grottos, the National Speleological Society does more than any other organization to study, explore, and conserve cave and karst resources; protect access to caves; encourage responsible management of caves and their unique environments; and promote responsible caving.

These folks recognize that caves are a precious resource that need preservation, and they are involved in doing just that.

They have lots of caving info, and lots of links to other cave sites as well. So have fun, but don't forget to bring along an extra flashlight!
