CNET's Guide to HDTV
August 12, 2006
Well, it took a while, but the Enderland house has finally taken the high-def plunge!
While getting my car serviced at the local mega-retailer this morning, I overheard a manager telling a salesman that a Philips high-def tube TV that they had on display was being phased out, and that the TV in question was in fact the last one they would sell of that particular model.
Well, my Norwegian ears pricked up and I sidled over and asked what such a TV might sell for.
I walked out of there with a "new" high-def for less than 400 bucks!
Now I really didn't do my homework on the model involved, a Philips 30". But at that price, I really couldn't lose.
However, many of you WILL be paying retail prices for high-defs, and will certainly be interested in doing your homework before dropping a grand or two on a high-definition TV.
That's why you will appreciate today's FamilyFirst pick: CNET's guide to buying high-def TV's.
They start by asking how much money you want to spend. That makes sense. Then they step you through what to look for in the TBV's you are considering.
They also alert you to such issues as potential DRM crap that will play hob with older technologies. If you buy smart, your TV will play whatever digital protection the Hollywood fat will throw your way.
So shop smart and buy smart with today's FamilyFirst pick.
