Computerworld's Shark Bait

As regular readers know, I'm in the tech field in the real world. And unlike many who are dealing with computers on a daily basis, I'm still tickled to be there after seven years. I guess doing something you hate for a living for 23 years will do that to you.

Unfortunately, many in the tech business, due to companies' slashing their IT budgets, must now deal with long hours, higher stress, and mediocre pay.

This was after so many chose this particular career during the boom years of the 90's.

So what does an overworked, stressed out techie do? He/she laughs.

Humor is an essential part of a techie's day. At least it should be. And the best humor of all is true user stories.

Today's FamilyFirst site is presented by Computerworld. It's called Shark Bait. It's a spinoff of their hugely popular series Shark Tank (and I'm a proud t-shirt owner, having had muiltiple stories featured there) Here's their mission in a nutshell:

Shark Bait gets into other subjects -- a slam against a company, a rant about a piece of hardware, or a glowing recommendation of a tool that you just can't live without.

It's entertaining stuff for the layman, too. For instance, there's an account there of a hospital techie who set up a windows machine with Solitaire on the screen so staff could play around with the interface and get familiar with it. One doctor called the helpdesk wanting to know how it worked. It wasn't the COMPUTER that baffled him, it was the game itself. He had never seen solitaire in his life!

Little things like that keep IT workers sane, and you non-techies will enjoy the stories, too. It's moderated to keep things nice and clean, too.
