Dagwood & Blondie
August 02, 2003
Sunday morning funnies in the newspaper have long been an American tradition. In years past, the funnies at one time were what were responsible for selling so many papers. But with other media becoming more popular, the Sunday funnies have fallen by the wayside. But they are still there, and some have been for many years.
Today's Family Site looks at one of the most popular and family oriented ones ever written. It is called Blondie, a daily comic strip that recently celebrated it's 70th anniversary. First created by Chic Young in 1930, it is the story of a Jazz-age flapper named Blondie Boop-a-doop, and her millionaire boyfriend, Dagwood Bumstead. The strip is drawn today by Chic's son Dean, and artist Denis Lebrun, and continues to be a very popular daily feature. Who can forget Dagwood's running into the mailman Mr. Beasley, or his boss Mr. Dithers, or the sandwich which bears his name?
So stop by this King Features site, visit with America's family, the Bumsteads, and check out the rest of the comics that are featured in newspapers around the world.

Does anyone know about the history of funnies in newspapers in the 1940's. I work for a theatre in England and am trying to find out about the comic sections of newspapers in America in 1947. Do you know if they had a separate section with comic strips and if so do you have any idea what the section would have been called? Or were they just a page within the rest of the paper?
I would be grateful for any information you might have.
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER BLONDIE MAKING DAGWOOD MASHED POTATO SANDWICHES FOR HIS LUNCH TO TAKE TO WORK? PLEASE REPLY.
