Directory Opus - a Review
April 30, 2006
Windows has had many weaknesses, to be sure, mainly in the area of security. But one weakness that has persisted with no improvements is its Explorer. Explorer is a single-minded, uncooperative file browser when compared with many commercial add-ons.
Today, FamilyFirst reviews the best file explorer/do it all program that I've found. It's called Directory Opus.
What does it do? Well, a better question might be what DOESN'T it do?
To begin with, it will replace Explorer if you like. That means if you start your file browser with a Windows key + e like I do, Directory Opus will pop right up. The first thing you'll notice is your viewing options laid out with easy-to-use tabs. For instance, are you a fan of Linux's Midnight Commander? You can get that view. Or, dual windows (something that ancient File Explorer would provide, but that Explorer inexplicably won't), as well as other views are available.
And Directory Opus remembers your last view, and pops it up as default. Sweet.
But that just scratches the surface. It is also an FTP program with built in SSH and SSL. Nowadays, webmasters who upload to their sites remotely DEMAND encrypted security. It has a built-in SMTP mailer, for simple emailing of files. Do you have a backup drive? Synchronizing files is a snap with a built-in function. View virtually every graphics file format within Directory Opus. Downloadable viewer plugins let you view movies, animated gif's, Flash, ActiveX, etc.
To sum up, this single program replaces and outperforms a whole host of others that would cost much more purchased separately. At $85.00 Australian (about 60-65 bucks American), it's an outrageous bargain.
Download a trial copy and see if you agree.
