Disabled World
January 31, 2008
It has become politically incorrect to use the term "disabled." Nowadays, the PC police insist on terms like "physically challenged," "mentally challenged," or "developmentally challenged."
Heck, aren't we ALL challenged? I mean, unless you have someone paying your bills, giving you spending money, and serving you breakfast in bed, you are challenged by each day's headaches.
That's why I like the folks who are behind today's FamilyFirst pick: Disabled World. No sugarcoating there.
Here's their mission:
The Disabled World web site, based in Montreal Canada, was launched in May 2004 to provide a much needed international online community for people with disabilities. Disabled World, one of the very first online communities for persons with disabilities, is run entirely from a small computer in a home basement near Montreal Canada. 14 hour days are normal and weekends are virtually unheard of.
So what can you learn here? The most fascinating thing that I jumped on right away was the list of Famous People with Disabilities.
For instance, to drop a name or few, Charles Bronson is a dementia sufferer. John Mellencamp has spina bifida. Dan Ackroyd struggled with Tourette's Syndrome when he was younger. Howie Mandel has OCD.
Fascinating stuff. There are a whole lot more resources here too for the disabled and their friends and family.
