DSOTM and the Wizard of Oz
January 23, 2007
I wrote an article which appeared on January 22 on my I Remember JFK site about Pink Floyd's immortal album Dark Side of the Moon. In researching the article, I was reminded of a unique phenomenon someone discovered about the album when played while watching The Wizard of Oz with the sound turned off.
It seems that if you start the album just as the MGM lion completes its third roar, an amazing synchronizing with the film's action takes place.
So today, I'm featuring not one but two sites that discuss the phenomenon.
The first site, Dark Side of the Rainbow, goes into detail as to what happens. It's pretty fascinating stuff.
The second site is a Worldvillage column I wrote way back when, when I had time to do such things ;-).
The column got me the highest honor a struggling young writer could achieve: it was stolen and posted on a newsgroup. Oh well, they gave me credit, I didn't mind.
It was written in 1996, when I had been running Windows 95 for a while on my very first computer, an IBM slc2-66.
In case you're not familiar with the old dinosaur, the IBM processor was basically a souped-up 386 that would run 32 bit apps like a 486, but just barely. It was a lousy match with Win 95, although it was pretty darned quick with its 16 bit predecessor.
Anyhow, my article is a tongue-in-cheek look at how Windows 95 would synchronize with really LONG songs.
Have fun at both sites, and get your CD and DVD players ready to go to work.
