Earthlights

February 11, 2008

One of the most dramatic differences in our planet in the last hundred years is the way it appears after dark.

A space probe orbiting earth 100 years ago would have spotted a few lights in major metropolitan centers in the US and Europe. Other than that, it would have been dark.

Contrast that with today's FamilyFirst pick: Earthlights.

It's a panoramic photo of the earth. It's a composite of the nighttime planet with every square foot visible without cloud cover.

It's an eye-opener, too.

For instance, we know how densely populated China is. Yet vast areas of the nation are in total darkness at night.

Contrast that with Japan. It glows like a Roman candle.

Another amazing contrast is comparing North and South Korea.

Guess which one is in darkness, both physically and in a humanitarian sense.

So enjoy today's fascinating look at which parts of the earth stay lit up after dark.
