Encyclopedia of Spices
November 03, 2007
I hope I don't sound like a broken record. But today's site is cooking-related once again.
The fact is that once you decide to become a serious (or at least semi-serious) cook, you need to familiarize yourself to the world of spices.
The idea is that you shouldn't be enslaved to recipes. You should feel free to tweak as necessary.
That's where today's FamilyFirst pick comes in. It's called the Encyclopedia of Spices.
It's pretty cool! For instance, you take a spice that you see on the spice rack and learn what it does.
Take cumin, for instance.
Cumin originated in Morocco, and if you walk the streets of Casablanca, the smell of fresh cumin permeates the air as food vendors ply their trade.
The site gives good common-sense advice, such as don't overdo the use of cumin, because it will overwhelm other flavors.
That was a lesson I had to learn the hard way.
Check out the multitude of other spices, and learn how to use them to fine-tune your cooking so that you become an accomplished chef!
