ExtremeTech

When I purchased my screaming fast 486SLC2 system back in 1993, computer owners were, for the most part, technically savvy.

As prices for systems plummeted, more and more individuals joined the ranks of PC owners. The result is that today, everyone from your grandma down owns one.

However, that aforementioned group, better known as geeks (or grrls, in the case of women), still makes up a significant part of the ranks of computer owners.

These are not satisfied with the simple tasks of reading email, surfing the web, and creating documents. No, they demand the fastest, the most powerful, the most extreme.

They are gamers whose video needs are only satisfied by massive, expensive cards with prodigious amounts of fan-cooled RAM. Their PC cases glow with neon. They have nicknames that are respected and feared by fellow gamers.

Today's FamilyFirst site is for them, as well as anyone else who wants to know the latest news on what is hot in the world of computing.

It's called ExtremeTech. It's deep technology for enthusiasts and professionals.

At presstime, subjects of articles included notebooks set to embrace the new VX laser mouse, the differences between DIVX and MPEG4 technologies, pimping your home theater PC, and a review of file-recovering software.

Don't miss the forums, where opinions of extreme geeks fly through the air like Halo missiles.
