Firefox 3 Download Day
June 18, 2008
It's finally here! Firefox 3 Download Day!
I think it is so cool that the whole world is excited about downloading their own copy of Firefox 3. The open-source browser has literally come from nowhere to be a mover and shaker on the web.
Go back five years and IE owned 95% of the browser share. The other 5% was shared by Netscape, Opera, Mozilla Suite, and a new kid on the block named Firebird.
Firebird was the pared-down browser that was developed as a stand-alone member of the Mozilla Suite.
Unfortunately, "Firebird" was also the name of a database server. So for its next release, the name "Firefox" was chosen due to its uniqueness. No commercial software out there by that name!
As IE's massive security flaws became more and more notorious (and exploited), the world began taking interest in a safer alternative.
Now, in 2008, the world is going Firefox crazy! My own sites show that nearly 25% of visitors are using Firefox! And with the excitement of Download day, those number will only continue to rise.
There's still time to help set the record! Go to today's FamilyFirst pick, Spread Firefox, and get your own free copy of the faster, safer Firefox 3! You can help set a new world record for downloads if you get your download by noon CDT.
