Firesign Theatre
August 06, 2006
Comedy records. They are like skyrockets. They flash brightly, then disappear and crash to earth.
Some of the hottest records ever made were comedy albums by Lennie Bruce, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and many more. But guess what? Many are now out of print, or have at least become obscure. Who remembers "Let's get small!"
But the fact is that there is a brilliant comedy troupe out there who included in their albums a sense of timelessness. They seem to have actually prepared for the future by recording their material in a manner that would seem to defy aging.
The group is called Firesign Theatre. Their official website is today's FamilyFirst pick.
My personal Firesign collection consists of I Think We're all Bozos on this Bus, Waiting for the Electrician or Someone Like Him, and their greatest, IMHO, How Can You Be Two Places at Once When You're not Anywhere at All.
They loaded their albums with so much activity that it literally takes many listenings to catch all of the subtleties.
The Flash-laden site will keep you entertained for much longer than the average offering, in keeping with FS's tradition.
Enjoy, and for Pete's sake, don't crush that dwarf, hand me the pliers!
