Flags of the World

When I was a kid, I collected stamps. Besides keeping me busy and out of trouble, it also taught me a lot about different countries.

For instance, in my old Scott's catalog (which I still have), each country's flag was depicted in black and white. I bought a bunch of stickers with each country's flag in full color and covered them over. I still recognize many nation's flags today as a result.

Today's FamilyFirst site will acquaint you with the flags of nations all over the world. It's called Flags of the World. Here's their mission:

"FOTW (Flags Of The World) is a site originally established by Giuseppe Bottasini, and devoted to vexillology. The site is fed with news and images posted to the FOTW mailing list and with other contributions from interested readers and visitors. Flags of the World is produced and maintained by an Editorial Staff of unpaid volunteers and the contents of these pages are offered freely to the Internet community. FOTW has been a full member of FIAV (Fédération internationale des associations vexillologiques) since 2001."

Vexillology. Wow, knowing that is the study of flags should come in handy in a future Trivial Pursuit contest someday!

Anyhow, you can see full-color images of the flags of every nation that has one. You can also see flags from nations that don't exist anymore.

Search the countries by name, or find them on a clickable map! That's the best way, because you will also find where the countries are located. That was one of the great things about my Scott album. It had a map with all the countries named so you could mark them off with a highlighter as you got stamps from each one. That's why most kids who collect stamps are also excellent at geography.

So enjoy today's FamilyFirst site, and practice up on your vexillology!
