Flipbook.info

When I was fourteen years old, I had a big American History textbook in school. One day, I drew some tiny figures playing football at the edge of a page. In my spare time (read: during history class ;-), I would add to the football action. It was pretty warped stuff. For instance, one player had his head knocked off. An ambulance backed onto the field and two medical personnel picked up the hapless player's body and left, then had to return for his forgotten head.

By the time it was finished, it ran the entire 350 or so pages that the book comprised. Needless to say, it was a major hit with my classmates.

With that fond memory out of the way, I present today's FamilyFirst site: Flipbook.info.

The site is from France, but is well presented in English. Here's their mission:

Welcome to FLIPBOOK.info, a website entirely devoted to an art form half way between book and movie. We have a collection of 3780 flip books (also called flick books or folioscopes) from 1882 to nowadays with a great diversity of topics.

You can read about the history of the unique little animations. They were hot stuff in the 19th century, and are still being produced in large numbers today. You can view hundreds of illustrations of them, as well. And best of all, many have been filmed in action! You get to watch the “movies” for yourself.

Lots of cool history to be found here, and a blog, too. Of course, you'll have to read it in French.
