Forgotten NY

"Start spreadin' the news . . . cause I'm leavin' today . . ."

I can't start a writeup about a New York site without imaging the Great Man singing one of my all time favorites.

That's right, today we shine our spotlight on the Big Apple. But we're shining it places that you might not normally visit.

You see, the site is called Forgotten New York. Intrigued? Here's what it's all about, in the words of its creator:

I had been noticing ancient advertising and street furniture for years, but it wasn't till I moved to Flushing and saw the ancient remaining Victorian and older buildings that stand among the cookie cutter brick apartments that I put two and two together and noticed there was no one out there who was really calling attention to the artifacts of a long-gone New York. So here's a site that does just that. Hope you enjoy it!

And enjoy it you will. The webmaster has a strong love for things New York, old, and in danger. For instance, consider the case of Red Hook Lane, just an alley to many.

But he has uncovered its amazing past. It began as a trail that the local Indian population had worn in ancient times. Colonists expanded the trail into a full-fledged street. When rebellion was in the air, colonial troops picked off British troops attempting to travel its length.

And now? After surviving in bits and pieces over the centuries, it's last vestiges are slated for demolition to create yet another office building.

Read stories of many more ancient landmarks, including cemeteries, trolley lines, and neighborhoods.

"If I can make it there . . ."
