Fugees Family
June 21, 2008
I love good journalism. That's why i love Sports Illustrated.
Besides the usual articles about goings-on in the world of athletic competition, there is usually a human interest piece. And it's usually a very good one.
This last week, they covered an amazing account of a Jordanian lady who emigrated to the US. She was depressed because she had yet to find her niche, much to the dismay of her wealthy father who paid for her education in the hopes of seeing her turn into a financial success.
It's an old story. But this one has a very happy ending.
The lady, Luma Mefleh, discovered a large number of children in her neighborhood, holed up in government-subsidized apartment projects, who needed direction.
She chose soccer (football, to the rest of the world) to accomplish the giving of that direction.
Besides stopping a large group of kids uprooted from their home nations from slipping through the American cracks, she ended up appearing on the cover of the New York Times. Her soccer program, the Fugees, is now one of the greatest feel-good stories you've ever read. And dad is very, very proud.
Enjoy their site.
