Google Web Search Features
March 30, 2007
Thew world of ones and zeros, i.e. computers, the internet, and all things binary, has observed a common tendency. There is a struggle for dominance, which is won by a company that keeps its crown until someone stronger wrests it away.
In the world of computers themselves, the early front-runner was IBM. They established their dominance in the days of Big Iron, selling mainframes to big business in the 60's. They stood head and shoulders above others like Honeywell, Hitachi, and Burroughs.
IBM used its muscle to initially dominate the personal computer market, setting the IBM standard that would eventually loosen its own grip on the industry, but would also assure that no individual company would ever again dominate like it did, a pretty amazing fact in itself.
Of course, we all know that Microsoft won the operating system war. But it will see its own grip continually loosened as dissatisfied customers like myself say no to Vista with their next computer purchase, opting for increasingly user-friendly flavors of Linux or Apples instead.
The search engine war, once seemingly in the hands of Yahoo!, has been incontestably won by Google. And Google's more obscure features are the subject of today's FamilyFirst site.
The site is Google Web Search Features. It will educate you on how you can use Google as a calculator, a dictionary, a weather forecaster, a spellchecker, and much, much more.
Google appears to have won this war. Will their be more in the search engine market? Probably so. Stay tuned.
