Habitat for Humanity
February 25, 2005
When President Jimmy Carter left the White House in 1981 to resume his life as a private citizen, he had a lot of activities to occupy his time. He was (and still is) a peanut farmer, a former naval officer, former governor and now an author. But one of his most satisfying activities, he has stated many times, is the work he does for Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat For Humanity is a world wide consortium of individuals, businesses, and churches that have a goal of helping people gain a decent place to live. They do so by building and remodeling houses in cities all over the world. In my town of Portland Oregon, they have several ongoing projects all over town, with a grassroots effort being it's main strength. On this site, you can not only learn about activities in the Unites States, but the rest of the world as well. There is information on how you can get involved, both as an individual or as a group. They are very involved in helping the tsunami victims in Asia rebuilding their lives, and information on how you can help is here as well. President Carter also has a special column telling about his mission with the organization.
This is an outstanding organization, one that truly practices what they preach. This world is never going to get any bigger, and we must all learn to live together. Let us help each other ensure that we at least can live in decent housing.
