Handheld Games Museum

Ah, growing up in the 70's. We had all sorts of innovations that were earthshaking in nature.

For example, we grew up with handheld games that involved putting little metal balls in various holes on a tiny gameboard. Or perhaps we had plastic pinball games. But in 1974, Mattel released Auto Race. It was the first completely electronic handheld game ever sold.

Flash forward to today. Handheld games have become amazingly powerful entertainment systems.

But it all started with those funky LED games we bought in droves when polyester was king. And today's FamilyFirst site pays homage to the phenomenon. It's called Handheld Games Museum.

The site is owned by an absolute handheld games fanatic. He is an avid collector who probably owns more old handhelds than anyone in the world. Once upon a time, such an individual would have to open a museum to share his life's work with others. But in the internet age, you can view his massive collection from your home.

And what a collection it is! Games from Coleco, Tandy, Mattel, Commodore, Casio, Texas Instruments, and so many other classic game manufacturers.

And excellent photos of every one accompany the author's commentary.

This site is a work of love, having absolutely no advertising on it. It is a well indexed collection of everything you would want to know about those irresistible handheld games we forty-somethings remember so fondly.
