Hearts and Hands International

When I was in the Navy (in my wild younger days), one of my haunts was the enlisted man's club at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The house band there was great, sort of a Hawaiian verion of the Supremes. But the song they closed every night was one that I remember to this day. The lyrics were "Reach out and touch, somebody's hand, make this world a better place, if you can". Those words made a big impression on me that continues to this day. What does the lyrics of a song have to do with today's Family First Site? Read on, and it will become clear.

The site is called Hearts and Hands International. This organization helps children at risk around the world. They assist by providing programs and volunteer teams to help with needs of children. What attracted me to them was a message that appeared on one of the pages. It says "Show how much you care to children who live in orphanages all over the world. Hearts & Hands volunteers provide love and care by providing for the needs of children with housing, food, clothing, medicine, loving attention, and even adoption". When I read this, the words to that song started going through my mind.

The organization has so many projects going on around the world, you can read about them here. In China, they are converting an abandoned school into an orphange. In Kenya, there is a project helping 5 villages with well drilling, bread baking, water purification, and homes and orphanages. In Brazil, "Projeto Florescer" is a home for 50 orphaned girls. There is newsletters from these projects, as well as information about the global crisis of children at risk, as well as projects that are underway in the United States.

They are always looking for volunteers, and you can fill out an online application if you think you may have some skills or gifts that can be of help to them. If you can't volunteer, there is a place to send your donations. Hearts and Hands International is a non-profit 501 C(3), so your donations can be tax deductable.

When I explored this site, I was reminded of how small this world has really become, thanks in part to the rapid growth of technology and the Internet. Now it is easier than ever to "reach out and touch somebody's have" and really "make this world a better place", since we can.
