Highway To Heaven
January 19, 2005
I was watching television last week, and to my surprise, came across a series that my family had watched in the 1980's. It was making it's return to television on TV Land, a cable network that is noted for broadcasting old television series from the 1950s thru the 1980s. This show was one that lasted 5 years on NBC, gained many awards, and is fondly remembered by anyone who has watched it. That is why I sought out a website that saluted that site for today's Family First Site.
The show (and the website) are called Highway To Heaven. The premise of the program is that a probationary angel is sent to Earth to help people solve their problems and better their lives. The angel is played by Michael Landon (of "Bonanza" and "Little House on the Prarie" fame), and his Earth-bound companion is played by Victor French. This series emulated Michael's true and sincere beliefs in the American culture and even the rest of the world that people can make better in their lives in a socially self-destructive society that keeps getting worse. The series was attacked by religious zealots and the press, but Michael laughed at all of them-- and his fans had the last laugh with him those five years. It lasted for 5 years, and was nominated for several awards, and Michael himself won a People's Choice Award.
The site contains information on all 109 episodes, with extensive lists of guest stars and crew. Michael and Victor were the only regular cast, but there were several recurring characters over the course of the series that helped tie the show together and give it a mini-ensemble feeling. There is also information on how to purchase the upcoming Season 1 DVD series from A&E Television, or the currently available 10 epsiode set from Time Life Books.
This was a wonderful program, one that anyone can watch and feel good about at the end. You may shed a tear or two, but they will be happy tears.
