How Stuff Works
October 17, 2007
When I was a kid, my dad bought a book called The Way Things Works. It broke down the internal workings of things like motors, bicycle pumps, dishwashers, and all sorts of other machinery. You got exploded views, step-by-step dscriptions of actions, LOTSW of cool stuff.
Today, there's the web equivalent of that book. It's called How Stuff Works.
The site goes way beyond mere machinery, though. For example, did you ever wonder how a tornado works? Watch a video showing how they are formed as a combination of moisture, hot air, cool air, and low air pressure. The Fujita scale is also explained. I know all about that. My home was hit with a tornado between f-2 and f-3 in size last year.
How about autopilot? Ever wonder how it works? Read about the first simple autopilot, used b y Wiley Post in an early flight around the world. Check out how the technology now is actually superior to human pilots in many ways. Feel safer about your flying!
The sky's the limit about what you can learn. How does Silly String work? Machine guns? Air bags? Hypoallergenic cats?
Suf in and learn something for a change!
