LAX Traffic Monitor
June 21, 2007
I used to live in the LA area years ago. I also shot a lot of photos. I remember setting up a time exposure shot that recorded a half hour's worth of approaching planes after dark. There must have been at least twenty light trails. LAX is that busy.
Toiday's FamilyFirst site will be of interest to all, but especially to those who have an interest if LAX. It's called the Los Angeles International Airport Traffic Monitor.
It's an amazing web application that allows you to observer air traffic heading into LAX in real time. The planes look much like they do on air traffic controllers' screens. You can watch them as they circle, approach and land.
But that's not all. If you click on a plane to select it, it turns red. NOW, you get information on that particular plane!
A screen shows you the aircraft type and current altitude. You can click on a plane approaching the airport and watch as it descends and lands.
This is cool stuff!
It seems to have the ability to show specific information about the flight number as well, including origin and destination. But that feature is either broken or disabled.
You'll spend hours tracking planes if you're not careful. And just in case you didn't knoqw how busy LAX was, pan out to 80 miles and try to count how many planes are in the air.
