Learn the Net

Yours truly first started surfing the web back in 1995. That translates to about a thousand internet years.

But I haven't forgotten that every day, newbies are taking their first nervous steps into the strange new world that is the World Wide web.

And while the biggest risks in 1995 were getting flamed on Usenet sites, today's internet can eat you alive if you don't take proactive steps to secure your computer, as well as yourself.

That's where today's FamilyFirst site comes nicely into play. It's called Learn the Net. Here's their mission:

Learn the Net's website went online in April, 1996. Since its launch, thousands of businesses, Internet service providers, schools, libraries, and community organizations from around the world have linked to the site as a way of providing comprehensive, user-friendly Internet training. Our field-test products have garnered numerous industry awards. Yahoo!Internet Life has ranked Learn the Net among the Top 100 Sites in 1999 and 2000.

This is a great guide for beginners, with their Master the Basics section. It covers everything from how to make a connection (although, presumably, that part would be handled before you could see the page;-) to all-important (and sadly neglected) netiquitte.

Of greater importance, though, is the Protect Yourself section. It covers virus control, phishing, protecting your privacy, and safeguarding your kids.

So newbies, enjoy our site today. And more experienced surfers, you can ALWAYS learn something new.
