One of the most anticipated movies to ever hit the screen will be in theatres in the next few days. It is based on a series of books that have enthralled youngsters over the past few years. It is responsible for making more children interested in reading than any other series of books (to which I can attest to). So for the next few days the Family Site of the Day will be spending some time with young Harry Potter.
Today's site is one where visitors can meet the author of the books, J.K. Rowling. At this site you can read about how this Exter University graduate created the first book by writing it at a cafe while her young daughter napped. There are links to the books, a screensaver, a discussion chamber where you can talk about the books with other readers, and a special wizard's challenge.

My family all love the Harry Potter books, when we get together Harry and his adventures are always topics of conversation.
My question is will Jim Dale be reading book 6? I haven't seen anything about it in any of the news I've read. They are wonderful and really bring the books to life.
Also on the negative side. We were all very disappointed in the last Movie: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban. We were upset the most that the grounds of Hogwarts were completely changed. And the movie itself was very hard to follow.
The other movies were wonderful. Please make them change things back.

Hello! If you have any spare time I'd like for you to answer this; Why did Voldemort *hissing noises* survive the killing curse if it ricocheted off of Harry? I rarely hear anyone asking this, and it's just sitting there, huddled up in the dimmest corners of my mind, waiting to be answered. It seems tht everyone is more concerned with making sure "Lord-- Thingy" is killed and none of the main characters are. But if it gives away to much, please, be elusive, I find it somewhat enjoyable to ponder the possible significance of the details in your books.

i have read all of the hp books, and i have also read all three of the lord of the rings books. i realized that there were some unbelievable similarities, in terms of characters and plots. i was curious as to whether you have ever read these books, and if so, if they were of any inspiration to your writing.
along with what "bobby" said about the relationship between the lotr books, and the harry potter series, i have noticed this as well. i don't know if you have ever read them, but the biggest similarity, is between the character in lotr, wormtongue. wormtonge is a weak, pale, little weasel of a man who at first started on the "good side", then he turned evil, and ran off to his old master, and was his personal slave. sound familiar? i really believe that there is no way that these similarites could just be a coinsidence.if you could let me know as well if u have read these books, it would be greatly apreciated

I like your books their like the only chapter books I read in my life. Their amazing for a girl. you really have a lot of imaganatoin. How long have you written Harry Potter book's? I'm on the fifth book and I'm glad because after I'm done then I can have a non chapter book brake and then in June I can start the 6th book. alright that "excpert" from book 6 was a total lie!!! 1. Harry can't perfrom magic out of school, especially near muggle-inhabited ares!
2.the 5th book never ended by Voldemort informing Harry of his family, or anything like that!

Here is a good rendition of What i think will happen in the final chap. of book 7
Harry’s heart pounded as he snuck past what was left of Hagrid’s hut – mere ashes – a symbol of Voldermort’s return to an even greater strength than he had known sixteen years ago.
A bundle of nerves, Harry’s forearm ached from grasping his wand so tight. He stole one last glimpse at Hogwarts.
Set below a starless sky, it looked dreary and foreboding, reeking of a terror that had not been present when it served as Harry’s home for six glorious years.
Harry tore his eyes from the castle and forced his seventeen-year old body into the forbidden forest.
Venturing through the looming trees, Harry wished that Professor Dumbledore were still around.
Dumbledore had been the only person Voldermort ever feared and at the end of Harry’s sixth year when Voldermort finally succeeded in killing the beloved headmaster, the dark lord’s terror skyrocketed, driving the entire world, muggle and magical alike, into hiding.
Harry refused to live in fear and as he stepped deeper into the forest Harry almost wished he hadn’t refused Ron and Hermione’s help. He had never faced Voldermort alone, but this time he had insisted that Ron and Hermione stay behind.
“This is my prophecy,” he had informed them resolutely. “And I am the one who has to fulfill it.”
Harry stepped into the small dirt clearing, the one Voldermort had designated as their meeting place. He knew what he had to do – kill Voldermort. His parents hadn’t backed down and neither would Harry.
After a few minutes of standing alone Harry began to worry that Voldermort had played him for a fool. Maybe Voldermort wasn’t going to battle him like his cryptic invitation indicated… Maybe he was going to mercilessly curse Harry!
Harry’s skepticism vanished when a tremendous green flash ripped through the emptiness.
Harry’s scar simmered in pain. Voldermort appeared in the flesh just feet away.
Harry raised his wand prepared to strike, but Voldermort was quicker, muttering “armadigoccia” and knocking Harry’s wand to the ground.
“Harry,” reprimanded Voldermort in a slithering whisper, “we shall do this fairly. Your mudblood mother protected you as a baby, Dumbledore’s phoenix rescued you in the chamber, the shadows helped you escape my grave, but tonight we shall fight alone and the greater wizard will fulfill the prophecy.”
Harry said nothing, glaring at Voldermort with the utmost loathing. Voldermort waved his wand and Harry’s shot back into its owner’s grasp.
“Back to back,” instructed Voldermort, turning his back to Harry. “We will commence this like a proper wizard’s duel.”
Harry wanted to slay Voldermort right then and there, but he didn’t. His competitive need-to-prove-myself attitude crept in and he refused to shoot Voldermort in the back. Harry would show his fortitude by demolishing Voldermort in a traditional duel if that’s what he wanted. He might be nervous but Harry’s no coward.
Pride in check, Harry turned his back to Voldermort’s.
“On the count of three,” said Voldermort dryly. Harry’s heart was really pumping now. Sweat poured from his forehead. “One, tw – on second thought.”
Voldermort swung around, pointed his wand at Harry, who was caught off guard, and yelled “Avada Kedavra” releasing the most deadly of Unforgivable curses at Harry Potter.
Harry felt the spell penetrate his body, his eyes blinded with a piercing green light, his scar burned worse than ever. This was death, thought Harry, and as he felt the life slipping from his body, Harry had another thought.
Last June, Hagrid, who had always said he would willingly give his life for Dumbledore, attempted to shield Dumbledore from Voldermort’s curse.
The curse struck Hagrid and because he was touching Dumbledore it killed them both. The human body is a conductor of curses and spells, much the same way it is a conductor of electricity. A simple touch of one person to another while being struck affects both individuals.
Harry would have to sacrifice himself to kill Voldermort. To terminate the dark lord they would both have to die.
With little energy left in his body and unable to see anything, Harry reached out and grabbed hold of Voldermort. He could vaguely hear the dark lord holler in agony.
As he clung to Voldermort, infecting them both with the curse, the piercing light grew too strong and Harry no longer felt anything. He had sacrificed himself.
Glowing in the forbidden forest sunrise, Harry opened his eyes and knew instantly that he was dead. He was looking directly into the bespeckled eyes of Albus Dumbledore.
“Well Hello Harry,” greeted Dumbledore as he floated above Harry, a transparent ghostlike figure.
“Professor … Is this the afterlife?”
Dumbledore chuckled. “I’m sorry Harry, but you are not dead.”
“I’m not? I mean we’re not?”
“I most certainly am,” admitted Dumbledore. “Do you remember during your first year when I told you that in the Mirror of Erised I saw myself holding socks? Clothes represent freedom to an enslaved house elf and I lived enslaved by my fear of death, the thing I desired most was freedom from my fears. I became a ghost when Voldermort killed me, doomed to wander Hogwarts for eternity.”
Harry couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “But how am I not dead? Voldermort used the killing curse.”
“You may also recall that I once said scars can prove useful… Scars can be like vaccines. Once you get a bit of measles from a measles vaccine you are immune to measles. Similarly, when you were a baby you received a bit of the killing curse from Voldermort. Your scar symbolizes your immunity towards it.”
Harry rubbed his hand over the lighting bolt scar amazed that his lifelong mark had saved his life.
After concluding their conversation, Harry mounted a nearby thestral. With the ghost of Dumbledore at his side, Harry flew from the forbidden forest prepared to inform the world that Voldermort had eternally been defeated and the world was again a safe place, able to tell them this because of the protection of a lighting bolt scar.
hey i was wondering if in one of the books you could somehow make Harry Potter have a sister.. like somehow got misplaced or something. becuase i have a scar on my forhead in the exact same place.. everyone calls me harry potter or harrys long lost sister or harriet potter. so please... i could play her and i talk with an accent too. thank you sooo much...by the way harry potter is my best friend!! i love him to death he is soo cool! =] people also think i look a lil like hermione but harrys sister but yeah so please think about it
I don't know if that person is really J.K rowling, or it is just another fan who pretents to be her, However this is my first time in this webpage and I just want to let "her" know that her books are the most alike to a master piece, not just because it is something new, but I really believe that these books are not only about Harry Potter's aventures, but about what is really happening in this world: wars, bias, chaos, divisions, deaths, and sadness... I believe that these books are very important in everyone's life, because they teach us how hard you have to fight to achieve your goals, and never give up.

The Philosopher's Stone is the original title to first book. It was originally relesed only in the UK. When it was released in the United States and the rest of the world, the title was changed to the Sorcerer's Stone. Apparently the powers that be didn't think Americans would understand the UK title. I think the powers that be are twits.

I'd also like to thank you, Joanne.. If it weren't for you I'd not be where I am today. When I first heard of Harry Potter, I hated reading, writting, school.. And even computers. But because of reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I now read any book that comes near my eyes. I love school and now wish to graduate and make something of myself. I very much so appreciate your unknowing support. And to think.. Getting that book started out as a dare. My bestfriend said "I bet I can get that book before you!" And the bet was on, whoever got it last bought the alchohal the next weekend. I got it first, but instead of drinking with my friends like usual.. I stayed home and read the book. I was confused about what was happening, but I didn't care. I loved what I was reading.

we all luv the hp books but in every interview with the directors of the movies they say that in order to capture all of the "important" stuff on screen they have to ignore the details of the books. well, u know why everyone loved lord of the rings? because the director wasnt afraid to include everything and actually make a reasonable timed movie!!!the reason these movies suck is because the details are left out

First of all, the book comes out July 16th, NOT June 6th. Next, I do not see why people are asking to be in movies, especially those who are not British. Ms. Rowling has said it will be a British movie. Plus having a British accent overseas is a largde strain. I get several requests from people, asking me to say Harry Potter, having moved from England to Canada a few years ago. Anyway, down to business. is there a way to contact JK Rowling other than mail, as I have a question. This question is: In the fourth book, when Harry's wand, and Voldemort's wand join together in Priori Incantatem, why does James Potter come out of the wands before Lily? If this was meant to happen, would that suggest that James was killed after Lily? My understanding of the book was that James went out to fight Voldemort, was killed, and he then came and tried to kill Harry, but Lily died instead. Then Voldemort withered away. If he killed Lily first, then James must have been killed later, once Voldemort had regained his strength. Was this intended, or a typo, and if it is not a typo, does it have a major significance?

I have one question about the book. You see in the fourth harry potter book when nobody believed harry for what he said about the death eaters and voldemort rising to power, how come they didn't use veratisersum on harrry to see if he is telling the truth like they did on barty crouch jr. Isn't this the most obvious thing to do at this particular time.

it is the middle of the summer, but there is an unseasonal mist pressing against the windowpanes.harry potter is waiting nervously in his bedroom at the dursley's house in privat drive for a visit from professer dumbledore himself . one of the last times he saw the headmaster was in a fierce one on one duel with lord voldemort , and harry can't belive that professer dumbledore will actually appear at the dursley's of all places.why is the professer coming to visit him now ? what is it that cannot wait untill harry returns to hogwarts in a few weeks time? harry's sixth year at hogwarts has already got off to an unusual start , as the worlds of muggle and magic start to intertwine...thats the summary took me 5 min to type but that's it.

I was just wondering about the fourth book, when all the people Voldemorte killed came out in reverse order. If it was reverse order, how come Harry's dad came out first? His dad died before his mom, protecting her, so she should have come out first. I was wondering if this was a mistake, or some future plot twist ready to hatch.

i finished the hbp in 10 hours and my cousin whos younger than me in 11 hours. i cnt beleev they killed dumbledore off. i cudnt stop crying afterwoods. this bit really made me emotioanl ( to the end of chapter 29) my pages are still blotchy:

I really enjoyed all of the books, I was very disappointed with the movies. Friends who had never read the book, but watched the movies had trouble understanding the end. I was also disappointed that a lot of important things are cut out and replaced with things that never happened. I think the woman with the brains should have more involment in the movies. I'm sorry to say this. I just finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, took me about four hours, I couldn't put it down. I read the first three before they got famous, I was in second grade. The latest was a little shorter than I expected, and the last few have been very dark. I enjoy the books and I will be sad when the 7th one comes out. I think Miz Rowling should keep writing, she'll make close to a billion dollars a book, right?

I don't know if JKR is going to have Harry die at the end of book 7. I don't think she should. If she wants to take a break, I think we'd all understand. But leaving him alive, could spawn smaller books of different adventures... like Harry as an Auror going after different evil wizards, etc.
I would just like to tell JKR that I can't believe she killed Dumbledore, that he was my favorite charactor and that I was absolutly sobbing when I was reading the last few chapters. My book is ruined from tears!! You have to make him come back in the next book!! I don't know if I could read a Harry Potter book without Dumbldore!! You have now killed off everyone who Harry ever felt for!! I hope you're happy!!!!!!

to whome it amy concern (hopefully ms. rowling herself),
i have finished the half blood prince and i have some ideas as to how she can approach the battle between harry and voldermort. with love. dumbledore has, in all of the books, said that love is more powerful than any majic and that voldermort always underestimated that. i think that harry should realize this and in his quest to kill voldermort, he should study light magic and love, rather than dark magic that doesnt affect voldermort. in several books, voldermort has been unable to harm harry because of the love he has, i think it is time that he weilds that love and uses it against voldermort. i also feel that the best way to do this would be to have harry realize that he needs someone to give him love and that he can love, so i think he should marry ginny (its heading in that direction anyways). so for the final battle there can ba another priori incantatem like in GOF and harry can use ginny's love plus his parents love to finally defeat voldermort. i just feel that harry should realize that the only way to defeat darkness is not with more darkness but with light. there are millions of children who are fans of the books and relate themselves to harry, it would be best to teach them that in the end, good will always defeat evil. i have more thoughts, but there are 2 reasons why i am not putting it all down. 1, its not my book or my job, and 2, i dont want to write a book of my own on this.

Chapter 9: The Half-Blood Prince
Harry and Ron met Hermione in the common room before breakfast next morning. Hoping for some support in his theory, Harry lost no time in telling Hermione what he had overheard Malfoy saying on the Hogwarts Express.
"But he was obviously showing off for Parkinson, wasn't he?" interjected Ron quickly, before Hermione could say anything.
"Well," she said uncertainly, "I don't know. It would be like Malfoy to make himself seem more important than he is ... but that's a big lie to tell…"
"Exactly," said Harry, but he could nor press the point, because so many people were trying to listen in to his conversation, not to mention staring at him and whispering behind their hands.
"It's rude to point," Ron snapped at a particularly minuscule first-year boy as they joined the queue to climb out of the portrait hole. The boy, who had been muttering something about Harry behind his hand to his friend, promptly turned scarlet and toppled out of the hole in alarm. Ron sniggered. "I love being a sixth year. And were going to be getting free time this year. Whole periods when we can just sit up here and relax."
"We're going to need that time for studying, Ron!" said Hermione, as they set off down the corridor.
"Yeah, but not today," said Ron. "Today's going to be a real loss, I reckon."
"Hold it!" said Hermione, throwing out an arm and halting a passing fourth year, who was attempting to push past her with a lime-green disk clutched tightly in his hand. "Fanged Frisbees banned, hand it over," she told him sternly. The scowling boy handed over the snarling Frisbee, ducked under her arm, and took off after his friends. Ron waited for him to vanish, then tugged the Frisbee from Hermione's grip.
"Excellent, I've always wanted one of these."
Hermione's remonstration was drowned by a loud giggle; Lavender Brown had apparently found Ron's remark highly amusing. She continued to laugh as she passed them, glancing back at Ron over her shoulder. Ron looked rather pleased with himself.
The ceiling of the Great Hall was serenely blue and streaked with frail, wispy clouds, just like the squares of sky visible through the high mullioned windows. While they tucked into porridge and eggs and bacon, Harry and Ron told Hermione about their embarassing conversation with Hagrid the previous evening.
"But he can't really think we'd continue Care of Magical Creatures!" she said, looking distressed. "I mean, when has any of us expressed . . . you know . . . any enthusiasm?"
"That's it, though, innit?" said Ron, swallowing an entire fried egg whole. "We were the ones who made the most effort in classes because we like Hagrid. But he thinks we liked the stupid subject. D'ya reckon anyone's going to go on to N.E.W.T.?"
Neither Harry nor Hermione answered; there was no need. They knew perfectly well that nobody in their year would want to continue Care of Magical Creatures. They avoided Hagrid's eye and returned his cheery wave only half-heartedly when he left the staff table ten minutes later.
After they had eaten, they remained in their places, awaiting Professor McGonagall's descent from the staff table. The distribution of class schedules was more complicated than usual this year, for Professor McGonagall needed first to confirm that everybody had achieved the necessary O.W.L. grades to continue with their chosen N.E.W.T.s.
Hermione was immediately cleared to continue with Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Herbology, Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, and Potions, and shot off to a first period Ancient Runes class without further ado. Neville took a little longer to sort out; his round face was anxious as Professor McGonagall looked down his application and then consulted his O.W.L results.
"Herbology, fine," she said. "Professor Sprout will be delighted to see you back with an 'Outstanding' O.W.L. And you qualify for Defense Against the Dark Arts with 'Exceeds Expectations.' But the problem is Transfiguration. I'm sorry, Longbottom, but an 'Acceptable' really isn't good enough to continue to N.E.W.T. level. Just don't think you'd be able to cope with the coursework."
Neville hung his head. Professor McGonagall peered at him through her square spectacles.
"Why do you want to continue with Transfiguration, anyway? I've never had the impression that you particularly enjoyed it."
Neville looked miserable and muttered something about "my grandmother wants."
"Hmph," snorted Professot McGonagall. "It's high time your grandmother learned to be proud of the grandson she's got, rather than the one she thinks she ought to have - particularly after what happened at the Ministry."
Neville turned very pink and blinked confusedly; Professor McGonagall had never paid him a compliment before.
"I'm sorry, Longbottom, but I cannot let you into my N.E.W.T. class. I see that you have an 'Exceeds Expectations' in Charm however - why not try for a N.E.W.T. in Charms?"
"My grandmother thinks Charms is a soft option," mumbled Neville.
"Take Charms," said Professor McGonagall, "and I shall drop Augusta a line reminding her that just because she failed her Charms O.W.L., the subject is not necessarily worthless." Smiling slightly at the look of delighted incredulity on Neville's face, Professor McGonagall tapped a blank schedule with the tip of her wand and handed it, now carrying details of his new classes, to Neville.
Professor McGonagall turned next to Parvati Patil, whose first question was whether Firenze, the handsome centaur, was still teaching Divination.
"He and Professor Trelawney are dividing classes between them this year," said Professor McGonagall, a hint of disapproval in her voice; it was common knowledge that she despised the subject of Divination. "The sixth year is being taken by Professor Trelawney."
Parvati set off for Divination five minutes later looking slightly crestfallen.
