Mr. Potato Head

I had one when I was a kid. Odds are strong that you did too.

I'm talking about the one, the only Mr. Potato Head!

The toy has been around a long time. Originally sold as a bag of parts you stuck on a real potato, several generations have grown up with fond childhood memories of the famous tuber.

Today's FamilyFirst site is dedicated to Mr. Potato Head. In fact, it's the official one, care of Hasbro. The site isn't really aimed at youngsters, but rather at their parents. It's sort of a guide to stimulating maximum growth and learning from your tots, via Mr. Potato Head.

For instance, the play tips encourage you, the parent, to teach your kids about emotions by asking them what feeling the face your child creates might be showing. You can also get Play-Doh into the picture (which Hasbro just happens to sell, nudge nudge) by making extra-large ears, or perhaps putting Potato Head parts into a ball of the venerable goop.

Playskool's Ages and Stages learning program is touched upon here, an excellent means for your kids to play AND learn at the same time.

And the toy catalog! I can't believe how many Potato Head toys are made. Besides the classic, you can get a memory game, a Space Spud or Safari Spud version, miniature Spuds Buds, and my favorite: the Star Wars Darth Tater!

I gotta tell you, though. The most fun is sticking those plastic pieces into a real spud.

So enjoy today's FamilyFirst site. Man, I'm so old I can remember when Mr. Potato Head used to smoke . . .
