Mr. Slate Solid Rock
December 08, 2005
Today's FamilyFirst site celebrates that most American of traditions: the local rock and roll band.
All over this country, communities have their local musicians grabbing gigs at clubs, fairs, high school dances, etc. The bandmembers have day jobs, because they're playing for the love of the music, not the money.
This site is that of Mr. Slate, a Chicago-based group specializing in, as they put it, “Songs from the late 70's, 80's, 90's and today, including; Led Zeppelin, Gin Blossoms, Joe Walsh, UFO, Stone Temple Pilots, Lenny Kravitz and Blue Oyster Cult are included.”
I'll bet your town has a group doing the same thing.
The site features sound bites of the band, as well as lots of photos. Check out the bios of the members. Hey, these guys are just working stiffs, with wives, kids, and a love for that greatest of genres, rock and roll.
There's a lot to love about these guys. The music is great, they interact and communicate with their fans, and if you have digital photos of the group, they would like them to post on the site!
It's hard to believe, but most megagroups started out this same way. Give Mr. Slate's site a try. If you're near Patine, Illinois, catch their show at Durty Nellies. And patronize your local small-time rock and roll band!
I'm going to go listen to The Sultans of Swing now . . .
