Music Map
July 07, 2008
Today's FamilyFirst is a fascinating, if not flawed, bit of technology.
It's called Music Map.Its premise is that you enter the name of a favorite artist or group, and it will generate a map of names of other artists that will likely appeal to fans of the entered name. The closer to the designated artist (at the center of the screen), the more likely that the artist/group that is generated will appeal to you.
Got all that?
It's a bit difficult to explain, but it is pretty cool to try.
For example, I entered the name Springsteen. Here's what I got:
Closest to the Boss was Jackson Browne. Home run there, I'm a big fan. Van Morrison and Neil Young close as well, two more of my faves. Also on the mape were James Taylor, Elvis Costello, bob Seger, Randy Newman, ELO.
HOWEVER...
Michael Jackson? Oh well, like I say, it's an imperfect process.
Stranger still was entering B-52's, and getting Bobbie Gentry as the closest hit.
Talking Heads for B-52's fans? That would seem to a be a no-brainer, but nowhere to be found.
Oh well, it's well worth the price of admission. Plus, it's a work in progress, so keep tuning in.
