Oregon Shakespeare Festival
March 10, 2005

"To be or not to be, that is the question...".
"Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo".
The above quotes are brought to you by a fading memory, one that grew up only a few miles from the first theatre in the western hemisphere to produce the plays of William Shakespeare on a continuing repertory basis. Where does this happen, you might ask? Not in a major metropolitan area, but in a small town in Southern Oregon.
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival has, since its founding in 1935 by Angus L. Bowmer in Ashland, Oregon, been producing the Bard's play in an outdoor Elizabethan Theatre. This theatre was based on the design of the theatres where the plays were first produced in England in the 1600's. It is an very pastoral setting, one that is an experience to be enjoyed, and will not soon be forgotten. At this site you can find out about this organization, as well as the schedule for the upcoming season, a history of the productions, and how to obtain tickets.
Having participated in two festival seasons in my youth, I can personally recommend this as an experience of a lifetime. It is excellent theatre with young actors and actresses who give 100% every show. Seeing Shakespeare performed under the stars in a theatre that was designed for it is an unforgetable memory.
