Pop vs. Soda
November 18, 2006
Red states. Blue states. Green states.
GREEN states?
No, I'm not talking politics. I'm talking something much more significant.
I'm talking about what people call their soft drinks.
Quickly, what do you call that can of carbonated delight you have in your fridge?
Perhaps I should have been more specific. That NON-ALCOHOLIC can of carbonated delight?
I grew up calling it a coke. No capital letter, because it may or may not have actually been a Coke. But in the mid-south where I grew up, that's what it was.
Interestingly, the map on today's FamilyFirst site shows the term “coke” used for soft drinks all across the SE United States.
And of course, the webmaster chose the color red to make his point.
In California and the NE U.S.? They call it “soda.”
Oh, and those states are colored blue.
However, the shocker to me? Both of those terms cover a lesser share of the nation than the color green. The green states? They call it “pop.”
What is the significance of all of this hard-won data? None whatsoever. It's just a pleasant waste of time which may spark controversies along the line of toilet paper over the top of the roll, or behind?
Enjoy.
