In 1990, I began a lifelong obsession with computers. That's when I spent some serious time playing with an old Compaq 286, and learned the power of a computing machine, albeit an old one.

But before that time, I had another obsession: photography. I began by getting myself a manual Minolta SLR in 1984, eventually getting into medium-format and even getting my own black-and-white darkroom.

I spent many an hour shooting b&w photos that required clever composition to bring out the format's unique ability to capture the world in greyscale.

I also enjoyed shooting Kodachrome slides, and learned to concentrate on red objects, as that color was emphasized in the developed slide to an incredible extent.

I've drifted away from photography since then, having far too many irons in the fire to spend time with it. But I still love it, and have fond memories of browsing through issues of the magazine responsible for today's FamilyFirst site: Popular Photography.

The site is called popphoto.com, and it is loaded with beautiful images. At presstime, these included the winners of American Photo's Images of the Year competition.

It also has tips for the photographer, reviews of equipment, and a display of photos from some of the masters of the 70's and 80's.

Enjoy.
