Regret the Error

A tradition that is as old as journalism itself is the retraction of errors. It didn't take long for the first reporter to make his first error and retract it, probably in the form of cuneiform characters on a clay tablet.

The web being what it is, of course someone has gathered retractions into one spot. And, as a matter of fact, it's a pretty entertaining read.

The site is called Regret the Error. Their mission is short and sweet:

Regret The Error reports on corrections, retractions, clarifications and trends regarding accuracy and honesty in the media.

They cover retractions in all forms of media, including online news, magazines, television, and the overwhelming winner in fixing goofs, the newspaper.

It's fascinating to see what silly mistakes are made in reporting, and the sometimes sheepish apologies. There is a slight bit of commentary by the site author, just enough, really.

It's a great way to kill a bit of time and get a smile.

What impresses me is the sheer number of errors! A typical month sports 60 or more errors. Oh well, mistakes happen.

Enjoy.
