Richard M. Nixon: The Watergate Tapes
April 29, 2001
To many people of my generation, Watergate has many different meanings. But to those who have only heard of it in history books or television programs, it probably has a different context. Today's FamSite is one that helps bring the impact of that political event up close and personal.
Called Richard M. Nixon: The Watergate Tapes, this site is one that has transcripts of pertinent dates of the event. But you can also hear the actual tapes themselves (using RealPlayer). Here you can hear about the possible use of campaign contributions to pay the defendants, the need to have resignations of John Dean and Bob Haldeman ready to go, and other tidbits. This is a chance to see history as it happened, with events that are still having an impact on us today. There is a link to the National Archives where there are 1284 hours of tapes available for reproduction. This site also has extensive history of the tapes themselves, and the impact they have had on the Executive branch of the government.
This is one site that shows both the dark side of our history, and the positive side as well. Enjoy your visit here today via the Internet Time Machine, and come back soon.
