Rick Brant Science-Adventure Series
January 29, 2005
Growing up, I enjoyed reading a series of books that my uncle had passed on to me. The books were "The Hardy Boys", a series of juvenile mysteries that were made for young readers. Those books made for some great reading (and they still do). Recently I was looking for some ebooks to put on my PDA to read in my spare time. I not only came across some of the Hardy Boys books, but I also found another series of books from the same era, but had a science fiction background to accompany the story line. This series of books is the subject of today's Family First Site.
The series of books is called "Rick Brant Science-Adventure" series. The Rick Brant books were a series of books written from 1947-1989 by John Blaine. Rick Brant was a high school boy who lived on an island off the coast of New Jersey. His father was a world-famous scientist. Rick's best friend was Donald "Scotty" Scott and together they have adventures all over the globe usually involving a secret science project of some kind. What makes these books so much fun to read is how they integrate the science and electronics of the day into the story plot line. For example, in the first book, "The Rocket's Shadow", Rick's father is building a rocket to go to the moon. This was all being done a small island off the New Jersey coast. By today's knowledge of science, they seem quite tame and impossible. But is that innocence that makes them so much fun to read. To think, actually building a rocket almost in your back yard.
There are 24 books in the series, written from 1947 thru 1989, when the author passed away. They are still available today, both as reprints and as the more expensive original editions. At this site, you will learn all about Rick and his adventures, about Spindrift Island, and all the adventures that he get into. As you read the books or visit the site, you will see a parallel between Rick Brant and the animated show Johnny Quest. That is possible, but it could also be a coincidence. These books are so much fun to read, they would make great presents to anyone who is just learning to read. Let them share in the joy of discovering these books, just as our parents and grand parents did when they were youngsters.

I had forgotten all about Rick Bryant but some of the first full length books I read were those and Tom Swift. I remember that there was a Rick Bryant Science Project book that I got when I was about 12 or 13(about 1960 or so). Built most of the projects but I liked the electronics projects best and that led me to get a degree in Electrical engineering.
