Roadside Architecture

Travel these United States roads enough, you're going to see it all.

Debra Jane is an agility nut. She is obsessed with the sport of running obstacle courses with dogs. She travels all over the country to competitions.

She also loves photographing things she sees en route. She likes shooting pictures of things like diners, pet cemeteries, gas stations, drive-in theaters, and, to my personal delight, art deco structures.

She has cataloged all of these things at her website: Roadside Architecture. I think you're going to like it.

Let's check out Diners. They are organized by location. Since diners are mainly a NE United States phenomenon, there are many photos from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York New Hampshire, and the like. However, she has also located and photographed them in Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and other diverse locations.

Each set of photos also includes at least a bit of info about the structures. In some cases, she goes into great detail when she is able to learn more.

Her art deco collection is my favorite. For instance, she has photographed some beautiful train stations from all over the country. It's miraculous that these beauties have survived, since passenger railroads themselves have declined, leaving these structures empty, or more happily, restored for other use.

You'll get a kick out giant things, too. Big milk bottles, oranges, apples, stoves, tires, you name it.

Have fun. And keep an eye out for neat stuff the next time you're on the road.
