Safe Surfing with Your Family

A family safe internet experience is one of the cornerstones on which the Family First Site is based. Since our beginnings as the WorldVillage Family Site of the Day over 7 years ago, we have tried to present daily sites that present a variety of topics to the visitors within our cyber neighborhood. With such a wide variety of viewers, we have not been able to please everyone with every site that we have chosen. Also, given the nature of the Internet, some of the sites we featured had links that took visitors off into areas the we didn't intend. But there is technology that can help limit these side trips, whether ther are an intentional visit, or by some stroke of technology taking one there. Today's Family First Site is one that helps enhance the family Internet experience.

The site we are visiting today is called Safe Surfing With Your Family. It is a part of the Yahooligans Parents' Guide, sponsored by Yahoo.com. Here you can catch up on the latest information about what it is to have a safe online experience. Safe surfing is a family affair. As a parent, it's all about being informed, Internet savvy, and open to the possibilities of the online world for you and your child. They would like to help to ensure that it is safe. They ask you to consider some safe surfing guidelines. The guidelines include: creating a family pledge on where and where not to surf; choosing an online ID for your child; and who to contact if your children encounter inappropriate material.

One area that is especially appealing is the NetSmartz Workshop. This is an interactive, educational resource that uses age-appropriate 3-D activities to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet. It is featured by the Boys & Girls Club of America and The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The purpose of the workshop is to extend the awareness of children while online, prevent victimization, and increase their self-confidence.

The use of the Internet has changed our way of life forever, and in a very short period of time. Who would have thought 10 years ago what computers would be doing today, and how they are doing it. Both parents and children are on steep learning curves on how to best use these technological changes. Todays site goes along way towards helping them to accomplish that goal.
