Sculpted Stone
July 08, 2006
Today's FamilyFirst site was one that I had a hard time tearing myself away from in order to write the review of it.
You see, I was in a paleontological mood (not sure that's a word, but I added it to my OpenOffice dictionary anyhow), and wanted a site with some great fossil images.
Well, I found it.
The site is called Sculpted Stone. They are in the business of collecting and preparing fossils for private display. Here's their mission:
The Sculpted Stone offers some of the most collectible and displayable fossils ever found on Earth. Each example is a unique, natural work of art, worthy of any art gallery or museum. Many of our specimens are prepared in house by our own Master Craftsman, exclusively for The Sculpted Stone. The quality and presentation of these pieces are arguably the finest in the world. We also exhaustively search old collections and contact private collectors to acquire historic specimens once thought to be entrenched and, therefore, unattainable.
What you are going to see here are some of the most stunning images of fossils that you have ever encountered online.
The fossils aren't cheap, but are well worth the asking price.
For example, you will see several examples of spiny trilobites. These creatures require many, many hours of preparation time to painstakingly separate plain rock from delicate fossilized curving spines that may raise up an inch from the carapace. When you take that into account, their prices are truly a bargain.
Additionally, check out the gallery of sold specimens. Some fortunate collector scored a cave bear skeleton that stood eight feet tall! Another purchased an intact mammoth lower jaw.
So step back in time a few millenia with today's FamilyFirst site. And be prepared to be amazed by some stunning photographs.
