Secure Your Computer
April 15, 2005

It seems that every time you turn around there are news stories about computer hackers raiding companies for confidential information. Identity theft is becoming a major problem in our high tech society. What many of us do not realize that is not just large companies that are at risk. Everytime you connect to the Internet (and with a broadband connection, that may be as simple as turning on your computer), you could be inviting someone into your computer. Once they are there, who knows what kind of havoc they can create. But with the help of today's Family First Site, that risk is greatly minimized.
The site is called "How to Secure Your Computer Using Free Tools and Smart Strategies", and it is an ebook by Doug Partridge & Kevin Ryan. They start by asking you 3 simple questions:
1. Do you ever shop or bank online?
2. Do you use an "always on" high-speed Internet connection?
3. Do you connect to the Internet from your home computer?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions -- and you have a PC using Windows -- then your online privacy and security are at risk. Did you know that the SANS Institute (a security research group) puts the "survival time" of an unprotected Windows XP computer on the Internet at 16 minutes? This means in as little as 16 minutes, an unprotected Windows computer can be discovered and compromised.
Another sobering fact -- a study sponsored by AOL and the National Security Alliance found that upwards of 80% of computers users have Spyware on their computers right now! The simple fact is that a Windows computer "out of the box" is not even close to being "Internet safe" -- and unsavory people have discovered numerous ways to exploit this situation.
"This Ebook Saved My Bacon!"
"Literally just minutes after reading the information in 'How to Secure Your Computer ...' I had a major crash on my computer, luckily I remembered a snippet of information that got me up and running again so I could fix the problem.
Hurrah for 'How to Secure Your Computer ...'.
A great big sincere thanks."

Many Internet connection IP addresses are associated with a DNS machine name. (But yours is not.) The presence of "Reverse DNS", which allows the machine name to be retrieved from the IP address, can represent a privacy and possible security concern for Internet consumers since it may uniquely and persistently identify your Internet account — and therefore you — and may disclose other information, such as your geographic location
