Shuttle Team On-line

Like the Jan and Dean song "Ride the Wild Surf", we're gonna take one last ride today. Only instead of catching a wave, our destination will be the space shuttle Atlantis. It is also fitting that we take a look at a part of our space program on this date, Octorber 4th, the 40th anniversary of the launching of Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite to orbit the earth.

As this is being readied for the net, and you are reading it, the astronauts are busy completing yet another successful space mission. Today's site is one that children can participate in, one that allows them to get interactive with NASA, and participate in the space program. It is called Shuttle Team On-line. It is a site that is designed to help students learn about the inner workings of the space program, and realize that there is a lot more to putting together a space mission that just the astronauts in space. Here it is possible to see activities and learning experiences of classes all over the country. Photographs, journals, pictures, experiments, all the scientific aspects one associates with space travel.

As the 21st Century approaches, the public demand to explore the solar system, "to boldly go where no man has gone before", is increasing. Planning for placing a man on Mars within 25 years is becoming more and more a reality, and less a figment of our imagination. The scientists and technicians that will accomplish this are in our schools today. Programs like this are what will make today's dreams tomorrow's realities. Visit and enjoy it.
