Sky of Stone
November 08, 2001
Growing up can be very difficult for kids, especially when the world around them seems to be changing as rapidly as they are. Today's FamSite is one that we have visited before, but with the release of a new book, I felt it was time we paid a return visit.
The site is about the new book "Sky of Stone" and is written by Homer Hickam. He is best known for his book "Rocket Boys", which was turned into the hit feature movie "October Sky". This book continues Homer's story of how he grew up in the coal mining town of Coalwood, West Viginia, and goes on to Virgina Polytechnic Institute. But no matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to leave Coalwood behind. And that, I feel, is the secret to Homer and his writings. None of us can ever truly leave where we grew up, even if that place is a thousand miles away.
So enjoy your visit with Homer and the rest of the Rocket Boys, and enjoy the website. But be sure to get a copy of Homer's books. I can guarantee you that reading them will be a memorable and unforgetable experience, and won't be soon forgotten.
