Superbowl.com: History

I know, I know, the Super Bowl has turned into a pretentious celebration of Itself. Those Roman numerals alone show how “important” it is.

But the fact is that it's the biggest show in town. And we all love it, at least when Dallas isn't playing ;-).

Today's FamilyFirst site is the History section of Superbowl.com.

I grew up with the Super Bowl, and can remember when it was “only” the NFL championship that was shown on Sunday afternoon late in January. The hype consisted of a few commercials.

Even though I had gotten into sports by the time it was played, for some reason I missed the Jets-Colts game. That was the one where Joe Namath made his famous prediction.

But I clearly remember the next year, Kansas City whipping Minnesota. It looked and felt like the Chiefs would be a Super Bowl dynasty. After all, they were in II of the first IV games ;-).Alas, that wasn't the case. Jets fans feel our pain, as our teams have continued to fall short of the Big Dance year after year.

You can watch Real video highlights of every single game, including the two I described here.

It wasn't until the 70's that Americans began changing their schedules to make sure it had a Sunday night free (and the whole afternoon, if you can bear to sit through a five-hour pregame) to see the Most Important Game of the Year. But I personally enjoy reading about the very first ones, where there was a lot less hype.
