Surfing the Net with Kids

One of my favorite all-time websites around is the subject of today's Family First Site. The name of the site is Surfing the Net with Kids, and it is one of the best non-educational educational sites I have come across. What makes it so appealing is that not only does it provide information for kids, but for adults as well. Teachers, students and other educators will find the information here truly wide ranging, and very topical as well.

There are several areas that make this site so interesting. There are weekly topics that cover as wide an area as I have seen. For the month of June, for example, topics were Father's Day, Korea, Harry Potter, the American Flag, and Billy the Kid. The topics are usually chosen to coincide with a specific date, such as the American Flag was featured for the week that had Flag Day in it.

Speaking of dates, there are many sites listed for each calendar date. On August 1st, there were links to the First US Census (Aug. 1, 1790), Anne Frank's last Diary Entry (Aug. 1, 1944), the US purchase of Alaska (Aug. 1, 1868), and Francis Scott Key's birthday (Aug. 1, 1779, and extra credit if you know what he did to become famous).

But there is more than just links to educational sites and historical events here. There are games, jokes, game downloads, art and music games, Halloween games, and Harry Potter games. Did I mention that there are games here? The site also provides and exceptional newsletter, one that can be delivered to your computer's doorstep every week.

Barbara has raised and nurtured this site over the years. I still enjoy reading my weekly newsletter, and exploring the sites she comes up with. When I say this is a non-educational educational site it is my feeling that anyone who visits here will come away with some knowledge that they didn't have when they first came here. A good site educates without the visitor realizing they are learning. In that respect, this site succeedes admirably.
